Farmer Producer Organizations

Producer centric and product centric approach has been one of the best proven models in the recent past as far as the development strategies are concerned. As a result, focus was on Farmer Producer Organizations’ (FPO) promotion and strengthening by development agencies that work with farmers.

It is known that Kovel has been into promoting / strengthening various institutions such as Primary producer Groups (PPGs), Self Help Groups (SHGs), Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACSs), etc which are mostly village or cluster/Mandal level with an aim to enhance livelihoods. As a step ahead in the journey with regard to the same, Kovel is promoting Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) with Pippalamodi farmers during the year 2014-15 to start with.

Kovel Foundation in collaboration with NABARD, Hyderabad implementing a project entitled “ Promotion and support to three FPOs” in three Mandals of Paderu Division for a period of three years. The project has launched its activities from 1st March, 15 in Hukumpeta, Paderu and G.Madugula Mandals. Each FPO is targeted to cover a total of 500 families in a phased manner. The main produce being targeted for various interventions are commercial crops namely Pippalamodi, Coffee, Rajma, Turmeric, Ginger, NTFP/Medicinal plants like Tamarind, Amla, etc procurement, processing, value addition, and marketing.

Objectives of the FPOs

  • Member education with regard to FPOs
  • Supply of Quality inputs
  • Arranging storage facility for the produce
  • Processing & value addition initiatives
  • Arranging marketing facility to sell their produce

Major products identified for FPOs

Pippalamodi, Coffee, Black Pepper, Turmeric, Ginger, Rajmah, Tamarind, Hill brooms, Jack fruit and other Medicinal plants which are potential in terms of quantities and dependency of tribal communities in the area.

Membership & Share capital

As part of mobilizing funds from the members towards working capital, they came forward to collect Membership fee of Rs.100/- and Share Capital of Rs.500/- from their respective FAGs (Farmer Affinity Groups) of 20 members each. There will be 25 FAGs in each Mandal covering 500 farmers.

Progress so far

  • Collected required baseline data
  • Promoted Farmer Affinity Groups (FAG) /Primary Producer Groups (PPGs) wherein both wife and husband are members
  • The FAGs are federated at FPO level that will be managed by Board of Directors (10 in number) which 2 leaders from each FAG represent in 
  • Meetings at each level are happening on regular basis so as to discuss the plan and action
  • Conducted training to members on cultivation of Paddy in SRI method with interested farmers as an entry point activity
  • Kovel has facilitated linkage with Agriculture department and provided farm implements to members
  • Exposure visit to FPO-Coconut to Ichapuram
  • Preparation of business for the FPOs is underway
  • Registration of the FPOs is in progress
